Cinematography

Cinematography includes camera shots, camera angles, camera movement and lighting. Use the term cinematography to group all of these together.

Today we were taught about different shots and angles. We got to know about various types of camera angles, camera movement.lighting etc.We got to know what Lead room/Nose room is.The thing we should keep in mind while taking a shot is,we should not leave dead space in the frame. This is done while taking a close shot.Lighting can change the effect and mood of a scene.

Long Short: is a large landscape that covers all the area in a frame. It gives the viewer a more specific idea of setting. A long shot may show the viewers the area where the action will take place.

Mid-Short: contains the character from the waist up. From this shot, viewers can see the charactersfaces more clearly as well as their interaction with other characters.

Close-Up:has just one character's face. This focuses more on the charachters facial expressions and emotions.

Extreme Close-up:has one part of a character's face or other object. This type of shot creates an intense mood and provides interaction between the audience and the viewer.

Birds eye view:This shows a scene from directly overhead, a very unnatural and strange angle.

Eye Level:  the camera is positioned as though it is a human actually observing a scene, the charachter's heads are on a level with the focus.

Low Angle: Low angles help give a sense of confusion to a viewer, of powerlessness within the action of a scene. The added height of the object may make it inspire fear and insecurity in the viewer, who is psychologically dominated by the figure on the screen.

Over the shoulder Angle: is a shot of someone or something taken from the perspective from the shoulder of another person. The back of the shoulder and head of this person is used to frame the image the camera is pointing toward. This type of shot is very common when two characters are having a dicussion.

Synopsis

Story 1 (Short film) – The Beard
Story line: The idea is to show what the perception of our society and the world has become ever since 9/11.

The story is about a well educated man who follows a good set of morals and also gives time to his religion, Islam. He follows the laws laid by his religion and keeps a beard. The story line is that where ever he goes and what he does is not properly understood by the public.

We show that in the short film, he is at a shopping mart and that when he brings the grocery towards the counter, the cashier perceives him as a terrorist. He hallucinates the customer, holding a gun/bomb and threatening to kill. And in fear takes out all the money from the cash register and begs the bearded man to take it. The man in confusion tries to talk to the cashier but the cashier still in fear only asks the man to take all the money. The man leaves his grocery lying on the counter and goes home.

Similarly, when he is at the bus station, a lady standing next to him drops a few belongings and leans over to pick them up. The man picks up the lady’s possessions and hands them over to her. While doing so, the lady too hallucinates the man as a terrorist and screams in fright, thinking that the man will take out a knife or a gun. The man gets scared runs away thinking that people around might arrest him for no reason.

Later  that day, he’s at a gathering and all the guests pass him strange looks. The man feels nervous and uncomfortable and by mistake he drops a glass and as soon it breaks the guests panic and scream that the bearded man is a terrorist. The man in rage yells that he’s not a terrorist and explains that he’s not a terrorist, and that they are the ones who are the terrorists by their actions and speech.
